As part of the Green Up & Clean Up Week we wanted to share the success of our first coastal cleanup.
On the 25th September we walked from the CCU via Forte do Bom Sucesso all the way to Praia de Algés along the bike path, covering a distance of about 2.5 km over 3 hours, litter picking along the way. We managed to collect a combined 103 kg of litter, made up of mostly unidentifiable fly-away plastic, styrofoam pieces, cigarette butts and we even found a bike.
The cleanup was part of this year’s International Coastal Cleanup Day initiative. In Portugal, this was promoted by the Oceano Azul Foundation and brought together 240 organizations that carried out 174 actions in mainland Portugal, Azores and Madeira between the 18th and 26th of September. Together, in the 153 terrestrial and 21 underwater actions, OAF mobilized 4,500 volunteers, cleaned 172 km, and collected 31 tons of marine litter! For the Green Team @ CCU, the coastal cleanup was a huge success and we want to thank all participants for their tremendous effort & enthusiasm! We hope to organize another coastal clean up in a few months time, so stay tuned.
