The Planetiers World Gathering is an international event for sustainable innovation with the mission to “provide society with the best digital, physical and technological platforms in order to accelerate sustainable development in three dimensions, environmental, social and economic”. In 2020 the event took place in Lisbon on October 22-23, with the option of online attendance due to the Covid19 pandemic, with more than 10 000 registered attendees.
With two sessions running in parallel, the event counted with talks from more than 200 different society actors (e.g. entrepreneurs, policy makers, scientists) whose joint efforts aim at creating impact on different levels having in mind the 17 UN’s sustainable development goals: raise awareness, close big deals and investments, impact consumption pattern, support sustainable innovations, and promotion of partnership and cooperation.
In the MEO Impact Stage, the world’s biggest speakers addressed the big questions and problems regarding sustainability. Amongst them, Gunter Pauli (The Blue Economy) brought the audience’s attention to simple and effective innovative measures. Sustainability? Think big and act started with a simple example of how Gunter, as president of Ecover, decided to pay 0,5€/km to workers cycling to work - a measure cheaper than the cost of a car parking lot for 5 years. His talk was a call to action, integrating nature with ancient and modern technology to revolutionise innovation in the most sustainable way.
Gina McCarthy (President and CEO of the National Resources Defense Council, USA) brought an inspiring message of hope to new generations to tackle climate changes. Politics, environment and pandemic: what needs to change shed light on how we can build on the context of Covid19 pandemic to promote the necessary societal changes for a more sustainable future.
The Crédito Agrícola Communities stage allowed the showcase of successful cases of sustainability implemented in different communities around the globe.
From The art of doing good, with Ronald Rael’s “Teetertotter wall” project in the US-Mexican border that brought people together; to Sustainable Biotech about the fruitful partnership between Amyris, a cosmetics and health-products company, and the Biotechnology group from Universidade Católica do Porto in the path to zero-waste product development; from Regenerative buildings introducing the concept of buildings as a material depot/mine and their circular potential for the upcoming generations; to the future of Mobility in terms of greener vehicles, renewable energy sources and efficient strategies for more sustainable transportation. All of these were inspiring initiatives that show how society can work towards a more sustainable future.
Overall, the participation in such an event allowed the Green Team @CCU to become aware of state of the art initiatives and actions to achieve sustainability. The different sessions are now available online so that anyone can be inspired to action!

O Planetiers World Gathering é um evento internacional sobre inovação sustentável com a missão de “dotar a sociedade das melhores plataformas digitais, físicas e tecnológicas para acelerar o desenvolvimento sustentável nas três dimensões, ambiental, social e económica”. Em 2020 o evento decorreu em Lisboa, nos dias 22 e 23 de Outubro, com a opção de participação virtual devido à pandemia de Covid19, contando com mais de 10.000 participantes inscritos.
Com duas sessões paralelas, o evento contou com a palestras de mais de 200 diferentes actores da sociedade (por exemplo, empresários, legisladores, cientistas) cujos esforços conjuntos visam criar impacto em diferentes níveis tendo em mente os 17 objetivos de desenvolvimento sustentável da ONU: consciencializar, fechar grandes negócios e investimentos, impactar o padrão de consumo, apoiar inovações sustentáveis e promover parcerias e cooperação.
No MEO Impact Stage, os maiores oradores do mundo abordaram grandes questões e problemas da sustentabilidade. Entre eles, Gunter Pauli (The Blue Economy) chamou a atenção do público para medidas inovadoras, simples e eficazes, baseadas na natureza. Sustentabilidade? Pensa em grande e actua começou com um exemplo simples de como Gunter, como presidente da Ecover, decidiu pagar 0,5 € / km aos trabalhadores que iam de bicicleta para o trabalho - uma medida mais barata do que o custo de um parque de estacionamento durante 5 anos. A sua palestra foi um apelo à ação, integrando a natureza com tecnologia antiga e moderna, para revolucionar a inovação da forma mais sustentável.
Gina McCarthy (Presidente e CEO do National Resources Defense Council, EUA) trouxe uma mensagem inspiradora de esperança às novas gerações para enfrentarem as mudanças climáticas. Política, ambiente e pandemia: o que precisa de mudar aborda como podemos utilizar o contexto da pandemia de Covid19 para promover as mudanças sociais necessárias para um futuro mais sustentável.
O palco Comunidades do Crédito Agrícola permitiu a apresentação de casos de sucesso de sustentabilidade, implementados em diferentes comunidades em todo o mundo.
Desde A arte de fazer o bem, com o projeto “Teetertotter wall” de Ronald Rael na fronteira EUA-México, que aproximou as populações transfronteiriças; passando pela Biotec sustentável sobre a frutífera parceria entre a Amyris, uma empresa de cosméticos e produtos para a saúde, e o grupo de Biotecnologia da Universidade Católica do Porto, na senda do desenvolvimento de produtos com desperdício zero; dos Edifícios regenerativos, introduzindo o conceito de edifícios como depósitos/minas de materiais, e seu potencial circular para as próximas gerações; ao futuro da Mobilidade em termos de veículos mais verdes, fontes de energia renováveis e estratégias eficientes para um transporte mais sustentável. São todas iniciativas inspiradoras que mostram como a sociedade pode trabalhar para um futuro mais sustentável.
De forma geral, a participação neste evento permitiu à Green Team @CCU conhecer o estado da arte de iniciativas e ações para o alcance da sustentabilidade. As diferentes sessões estão agora disponíveis online para que todos se possam inspirar para agir!
